January 10 1956 : CI&L Becomes the Monon Railroad

June 28, 1865 Indianapolis, Delphi & Chicago Air Line Railway Company Chartered.

 

February

February 1, 1883: LNA&C takes control of ID&C Air Line

 

 

March

March 1, 1886: LNA&C purchases the Orleans, West Baden & French Lick Springs Railway.

March 15, 1915: CI&L RR takes control of the Chicago & Wabash Valley RR.

March 25, 1975: Monon Railroad Historical-Technical Society Incorporated.

March 31, 1897: CI&L Railway incorporated.

April 1, 1886: LNA&C RR purchases the Bedford & Bloomfield RR.

April 3, 1974: F-4 Tornado destroys Monticello depot.

April 10, 1959: Passenger service on Indianapolis Branch ends.

May 1, 1865: Abraham Lincoln Funeral Train runs from Lafayette to Michigan City.

May 27, 1955: 500th TOFC moves on Train #73, Chicago to Louisville.

 

June

June 3, 1947: Ash Grove Wreck. The worst wreck in Monon Diesel history.

June 24, 1854: Last spike driven on the New Albany and Salem near Putnamville.

June 28, 1949: Last CI&L steam removed from service. Monon completely dieselized.

July

July 3, 1854: First NA&S train from Michigan City to New Albany.

July 10, 1863: Morgan's Raiders attack LNA&C near Salem.

July 30, 1971: Monon Railroad merged into the L&N RR.

July 31, 1847: New Albany & Salem Rail Road Company organized.

August

August 24, 1955: Future Monon Railroad Historical-Technical Society Webmaster born.

September 1, 1899: Indiana Stone Railroad completed.

September 10, 1898: Chicago & Wabash Valley RR chartered.

September 17, 1951: Train #5 destroys Monon, IN depot.

September 30, 1967: Train #6 arrives in Chicago with last Monon passenger train.

October

October 1, 1907: Indianapolis & Louisville completed Wallace Junction to Victoria, IN.

October 14, 1943: Partial abandonment of the Bedford & Bloomfield Branch.

October 15, 1935: Bedford & Bloomfield abandons Switz City to Avoca.

 

November

November 9, 1874: Bedford, Springville, Owensburg & Bloomfield RR incorporated.

November 24, 1939: Future Icon Frank "Frankie Monon" Van Bree Born.

December

December 15, 1881 LNA&C Board votes to merge with the ID&C, although ID&C continued operating independently until 2/1/1883.
