Help the Depot Museum Expand

The Depot at the John Hay Center started as the long-time dream of retired Salem newspaper editor Cecil J. Smith whose hobby has been collecting toy and model trains and railroad memorabilia. With the help of many, his dream of having a railroad museum in Salem became reality when The Depot was dedicated Sept. 22, 2001.

Some of the Monon artifacts on display at The Depot Museum. Left: Lighted depot sign. Most towns had a similiar sign. How many exist today? I know of three. Right: Restored seat from Monon's parlor-observation car #71. This chair is the most recent addition to the depot's collection. The chair was removed from the car when it was taken out of service in the 1960s and was later discovered by retired Monon engineer Ron Marquardt of Spencer. He and another former Monon engineer, Dick Fontaine of Attica, decided to donate it to The Depot after having it refinished and reupholstered.
