October 9, 2004 saw the official dedication of a memorial to commorate the workers of the Shops in Lafayette, Indiana. In the past few weeks there has begun a grass roots campaign to get a similiar project started for Bloomington. Many have suggested the former McDoel yard as a possible location. This area was part of the 2004 Convention Bus Tour. Many former Monon employees commented on their days at McDoel and how much it hurt seeing it all being torn up.

McDoel Roundhouse. Former location is possible site of the memorial/ monument.
The Society's List Serve has been buzzing with many ideas and suggestions on building a memorial/ monumnet at McDoel, or some other location along the former Monon mainline. We need your help. Please contact the local politicians and tell them why a memorial is needed. Like the Monon Neighborhood Society in Lafayette, if we all work together this project can get accomplished. We need to start turning up the heat, so to speak, to make sure this project will get some serious consideration.
The text below is an e-mail reply I received from Mark Kruzan, Mayor of the City Of Bloomington. There is obviously interest in Bloomington.
I'm extremely interested in your suggestion. I grew up around railroads
(my father shipped steel via rail and barge) and feel an affinity for all
things rail.
I collect Bloomington related postcards and added the attached card (this
image via your site) to my collection some time back. At that time, I
thought the card's image might make for a nice logo or for signage along
our future trail.
The contact person for our CSX Trail project is Dave Williams with City
of
Bloomington Parks & Recreation. His e-mail address is
williamd@bloomington.in.gov
I'm very open to your ideas as well as those of your members. We are
quite a way from moving forward on the project, but I would like to
include some sort of designation of the raiilroad as you've indicated.
Thanks!
Mark Kruzan, Mayor
